started businesses to prey on people who were receiving annuity payments and were in
extreme need of money now. They advertised that they could buy your structured
settlement for an immediate lump sum payment. They pay their client and take over ownership
of your payments for a far lesser amount than the total payments you would get over time.
Some firms would even not tell their clients up front that the cash payment is at a substantial
discount. These companies are in the business of making money.
However if your situation changes and you actually need a large amount of money
for an emergency situation, get as many quotes from these companies as you can and try to get
the maximum amount possible.
Don't be confused when the Settlement Firm tells you that they will pay you what they think is
the present value of the money, not what the settlement would total over the life of the structure.
You will need advise from a financial consultant or CPA to put an objective present value on
your settlement.
